Chauncey Mahan, the sound engineer implicated in a $100,000 extortion plot over Jay Z‘s music, is now suing the Brooklyn mogul and Roc Nation, TMZ reports.
Mahan claims to have played a large role in the creation of Hov’s earlier hit albums, including Vol 3…Life and Times of S. Carter and The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. According to legal documents, Mahan believes that he co-owns rights to the music and should therefore have possession of the masters.
Just Blaze, who worked on the albums in question, recalled Mahan as flubbing much of the creative process, particularly on The Dynasty album. He tweeted in April, “If you listen to ‘get you right right from Dynasty, You’ll notice all the choruses after the first one fall in the wrong place. Bc Chauncey.”
Authorities seized the music after Jay’s people met with Mahan at a storage facility earlier this year. He was also met by LAPD officers and questioned about the attempted transaction. Mahan denies any wrongdoing. His lawyer later said that he “wasn’t looking to get paid” when he contacted Jay’s inner circle. Instead, he wanted to inform them that the recordings were up for auction. “He is being persecuted for continuing to protect Jay Z’s music,” the lawyer said.
The extortion complaint against Mahan was later dropped.
