Jackie Chandiru has challenged the belief that social media has completely removed barriers in the music industry, saying traditional gatekeepers still play a major role in determining which artists and songs gain attention.
The former Blu*3 member noted that while platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and other digital channels have changed how music is distributed and discovered, they have not created a level playing field for every musician.
Jackie explained that many people assume social media has given all artists an equal opportunity to break through, but behind the scenes, influential individuals still have the power to shape the success of a song.
“You will be very surprised. People think there are no gatekeepers anymore, but they are still there. I’m telling you, there are people who will decide and say your song is not going to play,” she said.
She added that even on social media platforms, certain creators and influencers have become key figures in determining how far a song can travel. According to Jackie, the refusal of popular TikTokers to use a particular song in their content can significantly affect its visibility and reach.
“Even when it comes to social media, there are specific TikTokers who have become stars. If they refuse to do a video using your song, it can affect its reach,” she added.
Jackie’s remarks highlight the changing dynamics of Uganda’s music industry, where digital platforms have opened new opportunities for artists but influence and connections remain important factors in achieving mainstream success.
