The chairman of the now defunct PAM Awards Isaac Mulindwa while on one television station explained why it’s hard to sustain awards for so long not forgetting he held awards for 8 consecutive years, the longest time ever here in Uganda.
Isaac argued that it is always going to be hard for individually sponsored awards to stay for long where he gave examples of Diva awards, Golden Awards, Twaweza and Gospel Awards.“If they try to stay for long complaints will always arise of how unfair they are” he said.
He also made a remark on the recently concluded Hipipo Awards where one nominee scooped six awards and Isaac explained why this is so. “Its just working within your interests, if the artiste gives you business why not return the favour,” he explained.
Isaac is of the view that individuals cannot organise awards, it should be government or an association in the music industry to organise them, short of that, you are bound to witness more confusion.
Isaac also revealed that most sponsors have changed their sponsorship packages and the current ones do not favour those who join the wagon to earn in the short run.
“Corporate companies no longer sponsor these events and that is the reason most of the awards don’t go beyond their first year.” He continued to explain, “sponsors are now into ‘sales oriented’ campaigns like Kyakala. In the past, they used to put in so much, but things are different now.”
