Does the lord commander of the Night’s Watch live on – or must all men, even Jon Snow, die?
Game of Thrones released the first season 6 tease art Monday, an eerie still of Jon Snow’s bloody face – and it seems to only fuel the rumors he’ll be back.
Since his devastating death in the very last minutes of the season 5 finale, which aired in June, speculation has been swirling around whether or not the beloved character is really dead, or if he will be returning alive or in some capacity next season.
At first, much to fans’ utter dismay, it seemed there was no hope Jon Snow (Kit Harington) would be back, as the actor himself told Entertainment Weeklyin June, “I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season.”
Adding salt to our wounds, Harington then told Vulture: “Jon dies. It’s final. He’s dead.”
Showrunner Dan Weiss also told EW “dead is dead” and David Nutter, one of the directors for the smash HBO series, confirmed to PEOPLE the adored character was no more: “I can definitely tell you that after all those stab wounds, he’s a dead man,” Nutter said.
However, in the months since, a glimmer of hope has emerged that Jon Snow might be somehow resurrected as Harington was spotted arriving in Belfast, Northern Ireland – a popular filming location for the show.
And let us not forget #HairWatch, avid GoT fans’ focus on the fact Harington, 28, has yet to cut his hair and continues to sport Jon Snow’s long locks. Plus, he was spotted on set in September.
Though whether Jon Snow will return to the hit HBO show still remains somewhat of a mystery, Harington has kept busy in the months since his character’s demise, taking a stab at comedy in Andy Samberg’s HBO mockumentary 7 Days in Hell and landing a role in the thriller Brimstoneopposite Dakota Fanning and Guy Pierce.
Game of Thrones season 6 is set to premiere on HBO in April 2016.
