We caught up with Nigerian rapper Ice Prince as he revealed what inspired his latest single “That could be us.”
What inspired the name Ice Prince?
Haha… My friend decided I take on the name and I did. Am a prince though.
How did you join music and choose Hip-hop genre in particular?
You see Hip-hop is like preach, it is the only music genre that conveys a message in the same package you want it delivered. Hip-hop is known for talking to the soul and that’s what I always wanted to do in my music and good enough I do it too well.
Chocolate city, tell us about your branding.
Chocolate city is my music label. It is very well facilitated and can do a song right from producing, go ahead to do its video up to promotion. So it is a one stop production house where we manufacture and produce music. The name is a derivation of a sweet place, Chocolate City, no one would not want to be here.
You can not talk about your career without bring in the name M.I, how did he inspire your music?
I always looked up to M.I all my young rapping days. He is a legend here in Nigeria and he mentored me. Being categorized together with Mr. Incredible is an honor for anyone and am delighted to have worked with him at some point. He is my mentor.
Tell us about your latest song “That could be us”
That could be us is a story about a young girl who declined all advances from men but later regrets not having given them a chance. It a story I see in everyday life. One day you are despising a job and the next day you wish you had that job so “That could be us” is precisely about using any availed opportunity at a time.
Any future prospects?
Yeah, I have quite a number of upcoming projects. I have my new album coming up 2015 and am working on releasing it as early as possible. I am working on projects with a few foreign artistes but that I will reveal later.
Last words.
S/O to every single fan out there, I really appreciate the love and support. God Bless you. Thank you for this interview too. I love Uganda and Africa at large.
