jo-1

Bermudan born Joanne Ball-Burgess also known by her stage name JO-1 is a well known dance judge on East Africa’s biggest dance show, Sakata Mashariki. She is the longest standing female judge on the show and is known for her honest comments. She is also a musician.

When did you start your musical and dance journey?

I started singing at the age of 7 in church. I was a very shy child back then. I also loved to dance but didn’t start performing until my teens mostly again because of shyness. I know that watching Sakata no one believes that I was or am a shy person.

What don’t People know about you?

Most people don’t know that I am a singer, dancer and author. My vocal abilities range from R&B to Neo-soul to dancehall. In dance I’ve been trained in jazz, contemporary, hip hop and dancehall.

What else do you do apart from singing and dancing?

I love to write poetry, children’s fiction and more recently memoir. I’ve won awards and recognition for them.

What are some of the challenges of being a dance judge on Sakata?

Here in Kenya most people know me as the mean Judge Joanne. I don’t see myself as mean. I see myself as giving tough love to the dance crews in order to push them even further in dance. This year the competition is real stiff. It’s the first time I wish that I could dance with some of the crews while I’m judging them. One of the challenges of being a dance judge is not allowing dance to get into your head only,As dancers dance is in our body and soul.

Which countries have you traveled to in the name of music and dance?

I’ve had quite a journey with my singing and dancing. I’ve performed and taught dance in various places in the world including Cyprus, Egypt, The United States and Bermuda. I am a trained teacher where my speciality is to infuse dance, drama and the visual arts into school curriculum especially Literacy and History.

How do you manage to do all these things?

I love the fact that I can do art and touch the world in this way. Many people wonder how I am able to do so many things at one time. I’m used to being busy and as long as I take time to enjoy life in the midst of my schedule then I don’t feel overwhelmed.

Which was your first song released in Kenya?

My first track in Kenya launched last year. It was called Chiziqa. I am thankful to all the fans who love Chiziqa and the stations who have played it on rotation.

Any new music?

Recently I released my second track called, “Good Love.” It’s a dancehall song about love that goes beyond language. Prof is also featured on the track.
