Former Uganda Cranes Captain Ibrahim Sekagya has announced his retirement from football, bringing an end to his 20-year career.
Having played for several clubs around the globe, Sekagya is probably the most successful player in the last two decades in Ugandan football despite failing to lead the Cranes into the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 34-year-old kicked off the journey of his career at the Kawempe based first division club Equatorial FC back in 1995. He has since played in several prestigious leagues across the globe.
The former Cranes defender reportedly announced his retirement from active football after being offered a lucrative deal at New York Red Bulls as part of the team’s backroom coaching staff for Team B.
“It has been a wonderful journey for me. It has been remarkable experience for me. I would like to thank my family, especially my wife for all the support she rendered me. I thank all the supporters and teammates,” the flamboyant defender told New Vision.
“I have played with through my career at club and with the national team for making me the player and human being I am today. I have taken the decision after consulting with my family and I believe it’s the right time to start a new chapter with Red Bulls. I am still part of the Red Bulls family and I thank them for giving me the opportunity to continue working with them,” Sekagya added.
Indeed he is a football icon not just in Uganda but around the globe.
