While addressing the media yesterday at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala, former Barcelona and Netherlands star Edgar Davids expressed a strong desire to play against Uganda players.
“We are delighted to play this match. I can’t wait to play against the former Uganda players. I hear they are talented,” an excited Davids said.
Davids will play for ex-Barcelona stars as they face off with a Uganda national select side in an exhibition match that is slated for December 5th 2015 at Namboole Stadium as part of a campaign to help establish a state of the art soccer academy under the Rayco Garcia Foundation in the Pearl of Africa.
Davids was nicknamed Pitbull during his spell at Barcelona by the then manager and currently Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal for his aggressiveness and hard-tackling skills.
Rayco Garcia’s goal in Uganda is to establish the Rayco Garcia Football Academy, a cause that has been highly supported following visits by different retired football stars like Patrick Kluivert, Luis Garcia and now Edgar Davids with Barcelona skipper Adreas Iniesta expected to be in the country later this year for the same cause.
“We know Uganda has talent and we are delighted to be part of this. Uganda is an upcoming country with potential, (and) it is easy to make impact.”
Garcia already has the support and backing of President Museveni, FUFA, Uganda Tourism Board, ICEA, KCCA, Sheraton Hotel and Nile Breweries in tow.
