How to take your makeup from day to night

sexy-black-womanWith the holidays, your already busy schedule is guaranteed to get crazier with all the parties and events that you have to attend.

No matter how stressed or frazzled you are, you’ll want to look your best! We reached out to celebrity makeup gurus Amanda Shackleton and Vanessa Elese for tips on transitioning your makeup from daytime professional to nighttime dazzling.

Face
Having a clean canvas is key to long lasting makeup that won’t wear off as the night progresses, and after working an eight-hour work day, you know your foundation is not at its best. So, when it comes to touching up your foundation, Shackleton, whose celeb clientele includes Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rosario Dawson, recommends always having blotting paper on hand.

If you apply foundation on oily skin, “It will change the color of your foundation and slide right off,” she says. So, taking a few seconds to blot off the excess oil is crucial to having a fresh base. Amanda suggests carrying a foundation stick if you’re in a rush.

“These are small and can work as both a concealer and foundation. Pat on where needed, especially under the eyes, and seal with another blotting paper.”

Eyes
When transitioning from office makeup to a holiday party look, adjusting your eye makeup can make a huge difference. Elese, an Emmy Award-winning celebrity beauty expert, recommends wearing a light smoky eye to work and then later deepening the color to create a darker smoky effect. To achieve this, she recommends Nars “Brumes” Duo Eyeshadow that has a matte charcoal and a highlighter blue slate color.

“Transition your light gray wash to evening with an additional application of the gray to really smoke out your eye. Then place the highlighting color in the center of your lid, blending gently to the corners for a layered look that will draw light with the subtle shimmer into your eyes,” she says.

A smoky eye can be created using just about any color, so play around and see what looks best on you! For eyeliner, Shackleton suggests thickening the line or adding a cat eye. “By bringing the liner out and sweeping the cat eye extension slightly up, it creates a more dramatic look and lifts up the corners of your outer lids to make you look more awake.”

Lips
Your lips serve as the exclamation point for your makeup. For the office, Elese suggests choosing a color that can be “gently applied then blotted for face awakening effect.” Then when night falls and you’re ready for the party, “fully saturate your lips with an even, dramatic application and then blot.”

Nighttime is a great chance for you to go for a more dramatic lip color, so Shackleton suggests popping on a matte red or fuchsia lipstick.
