Hima Cement, Uganda’s leading manufacturer of quality cement brands has today announced sponsorship of the 2017 edition of the annual Captain’s Prize Golf Tournament.

The tournament that is slated for March 16 – 18, 2017 at the lush greens of the Kitante Golf Club is expected to attract over 250 participants; both amateur and professional golfers from the region.

Speaking at a press briefing, Charles Mugasa, the Hima Cement Marketing Director said that the tournament this year will be bigger owing to the number of golfers expected as well as the anticipated competition.

“Hima cement is proud to have been associated with the Captain’s Prize. Since 2002 when we first sponsored this tournament, we have seen tremendous growth in the game. I am happy to announce that Hima Cement is this year committing UGX70m into the tournament,” he stated.

Adding, “The caliber of golfers that have confirmed participation this year will make for an exciting tournament. We anticipate a great showing and fans of golf will be in for a treat.”

The Professional golfers will tussle it out for a UGX10m prize kitty on March 16 – 17 whilst the amateurs will play on Saturday March 18, 2017 for a chance to win various prizes on offer.

“We have enjoyed 15 hugely successful years with the Uganda Golf Union and specifically the Captain’s Prize. Over the years, we have learnt vital lessons from the game of golf. We wish all the participants good luck and may the best golfer take the day,” said Mugasa.

The Hima Cement Captain’s Prize is one of local golf’s premier events and attracts both amateur and professional golfers from the entire region. It is hosted by the outgoing Captain of the club and this will be 15th consecutive year that Hima Cement is sponsoring the tournament.

Prof. Anthony Kerali, the Captain of the Uganda Golf Club lauded Hima Cement for its unrelenting support that has over the years helped elevate the profile of the game.

“We highly value our longstanding relationship with Hima Cement. With their support, we have managed to beautify the golf club. For instance the retaining wall at the water hazard on Hole Number four was built by Hima Cement products as well as the bridges around the course. There are so many things we have done together and we hope that this partnership will continue,” Kerali said.

Adding, “Many of us have used Hima products and know the quality. Incidentally, I am one of the few professors of Cement in this country. I studied a lot about cement while pursuing my PhD. So when I say Hima has good products, it is from an informed point of view.”

Hima Cement has a rich history of sponsoring sports in Uganda. The building solutions company currently sponsors Vipers Sports Club, Hima Cement Heathens Rugby Club and is also into kickboxing.

The cement maker is also into motorsport with rally ace Ambrose Byona, widely known by his moniker ‘Omunyetto’ in the driving seat.
