MTN Uganda recently launched countrywide 4G coverage in Uganda, extending the latest broadband technology to all major towns. This latest investment for the first time now takes the MTN 4G experience beyond Kampala, across all corners of Uganda, to enable high speed internet access for its customers. Here’s what you need to know about the recently launched MTN 4G/LTE internet.

What is 4G/LTE?

4G is the 4th generation of mobile network technology, giving you faster speeds and an overall better internet experience. You’ll definitely notice a difference when you’re gaming, streaming, downloading and surfing. It’s fast.

What is the difference between 3G and 4G?

In a word – speed. MTN 4G provides lightning fast mobile internet speeds (over 100Mbps). Impressive right? MTN 4G is available in nationwide.

4G is a data-only network. That means that when you make or receive a call, your service will automatically switch from 4G onto the MTN 3G network. When you make or receive a call, you’ll notice the ‘4G’ or ‘LTE’ symbol on your screen will switch to a 3G symbol. When you finish your call, your service will reconnect back onto 4G where available.

What is difference between the names LTE and 4G?

There is absolutely no difference. 4G also often referred to as LTE, stands for ‘Long Term Evolution’. Different handset manufacturers refer to both terms so on an iPhone you will see ‘LTE’ on the screen (when in 4G coverage) and in your menu settings, where as on Android devices you could have both ‘4G’ and ‘LTE’ on your screen and in menu settings.

Where is the MTN 4G network?

The MTN 4G network is available in Kampala and major towns across Uganda in areas including Mbarara, Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu, Jinja, Kasese, Moroto, Kabale, Lira, Masaka, and Mbale.

How will I know where 4G is?

When you’re getting 4G coverage on your 4G-ready phone, you’ll see either ‘4G’ or ‘LTE’ appear next to the signal bars at the top of your screen.

Will my device always stay connected to 4G?

You might notice that your device is switching between 3G and 4G coverage as you move around – that’s because it will automatically select the strongest signal for the area you’re in. As our network continues to grow throughout the year, you will notice that your device will spend more and more time on 4G over 3G.

If you are using a dongle, MiFi or router, while connected to a laptop or computer, the device web interface will display either 4G or 3G.

MTN launched 4G in 2013, what is different with the launch then and now?

When we launched 4G in 2013, it was very new technology and there was a lot to learn. For example, our customers using 4G then could not automatically switch between the technology and the older 3G. This meant that in areas, where MTN did not have 4G coverage, customers could not use the service. MTN has since worked with our technology partners to fix these challenges.

In addition, the 4G coverage this time covers a much wider area across Uganda. MTN has extended the 4G network to more than 75 sites, covering major towns across the country.

MTN has also invested significantly in capacity and can therefore accommodate larger numbers of customers simultaneously using the network at any one time.

Which devices in MTN’s range are 4G-ready?

MTN has a wide range of affordable devices that suit different customer segments. Please check our July device magazine for the amazing 4G offers.

Can I turn 4G off?

You can deactivate 4G in your phone, dongle/MiFi or tablet’s menu settings. This lets you easily turn it off and on when you want. However, if you choose this option and update your phone or tablet’s software in the future, 4G may default back ‘on’, so watch out for that.

Do I need a new SIM card?

You will need a new 4G SIM card. You can easily swap your old SIM card for a 4G SIM card at any MTN Service Centre.

Does 4G cost extra?

Not necessarily. Let us say you have been taking 30 minutes to download a movie, with 4G, you could get it within 5 minutes. The idea is that with 4G you get to do more in much less time.

You can manage and keep track of your usage using the MTN Smart app. You can download the MTN app via the Android/Apple app store.

MTN at the forefront of Uganda’s Fourth Industrial Revolution

Somdev Sen, The Chief Marketing Officer MTN Uganda

By Our Reporter

The Fourth Industrial Revolution commonly referred to as 4IR or Industry 4.0 has been a buzz phrase for many across the world for quite some time. With over 20 years of telecom experience in Asia and Africa, Somdev Sen, the Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda sheds more light on the concept.

Although it is a buzz phrase for many in the developed part of the world, for a country like Uganda, a lot of the 4IR concepts may seem to be too farfetched. However, it is a necessity that we all should work towards achieving.

With 4IR, humanity will be able to bridge the gap between the physical, the digital and the biological as concepts like the Internet of things, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, technologies like robotics, 3D printing, quantum computing will become a way of daily life.

However for this to happen, there is a great need for high speed internet connectivity. The world is already moving to a whole new ball game of ‘latency’ through the adoption of 5G technology.

Early this year, MTN Uganda hosted a successful 5G trial showcase that was the first of its kind in East Africa but according to Sen, that is of no consequence unless it finds relevance, practicality, and commercial viability within its end users.

Sen observes that the National Broadband policy will ease Uganda’s journey to her own 4IR.

“I believe the government’s broadband policy will pave the way of Uganda’s journey towards its own 4IR. Our responsibility as the leading Telecom and Technology Company is therefore to align to this vision and work with the government and the people of Uganda at large to convert it into reality,” Sen says.

He further adds that as the leading telecom service provider of this country, MTN not only sits at the helm of the technology delivery but also has a responsibility of making the technology relevant and affordable to the common people of Uganda.

He however notes that MTN cannot do it alone. “Every stakeholder must jump onto the band wagon. Regulators must encourage policies that are robust and friendly towards both customers, and Technology Service Providers. Revenue authorities must objectively evaluate existing tax regimes to eliminate possible bottlenecks, especially in the Data and Mobile money space,” says Sen.

He notes that MTN’s vision is to support all these stakeholders and work with them to deliver a bold new digital world to all their customers.

“With our robust 3G and 4G network rollout plan across the country, with our already existing largest fibre footprint, we are building a strong future focused high-speed connectivity infrastructure in Uganda,” Sen says.

As MTN we have a big role to play. We have to embrace it and lead the way to Uganda’s very own 4th Industrial revolution by providing the best telecommunications network and digital services, and solutions that are relevant, affordable and customized for the specific needs of Uganda.

ayoba

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda, in partnership with SIMFY AFRICA, has launched a messaging platform called ‘ayoba’ that will enable customers to access more affordable communication.

ayoba is an instant messaging app available for now for Android devices and soon for iOS and works with any network. What makes it different from other messaging apps is that you can still chat (app to SMS and SMS to app) with anyone regardless of whether they have the ayoba app or not. MTN customers can reply to these messages on SMS even when they don’t have the app.

According to Wim Vanhelleputte, MTN Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer, this innovation underscores MTN’s leadership ambitions in innovation as it helps Africa claim its place in the IM evolution.

“We are keen to see Africa actively participate in the global digital revolution that is now being further accelerated by the Covid-19 situation. Innovation and the connectivity that goes with it, are particularly key to our digital proposition. They are both crucial in our contribution to the social and economic transformation of our country,” said Wim Vanhelleputte.

“ayoba is not just a new platform for people to chat with each other, it is a one of a kind digital platform that elevates the concept of instant messaging to a whole new level of instant and integrated connecting,” he added.

With the app, you can also securely send and receive text messages, voice messages, videos, images, audio and other files with any of your contacts, using your mobile internet connection. MTN customers will however not need any data (MBs) to use the service. They can use it free of charge up to 1GB of data, every month.

Speaking about this partnership, David Gilarranz CEO of SIMFY AFRICA, “We are delighted to partner with MTN in Uganda and to offer its customers the ability to use the app with no data costs. In the coming weeks, our app will surely become a super app as we will be adding more features, like mobile money and music, as well as allowing other apps to co-exist in ayoba. We would like to take this opportunity to thank MTN Uganda for trusting our journey.”

ayoba is a Pan African messaging platform, built by Africans for Africans. It is available in several African languages, such as Swahili, Luganda, Hausa, isiXhosa, and Yoruba.

It has end-to-end encryption to keep users’ data safe and ensure their privacy as they chat with their contacts regardless of their device or network. ayoba also has channels on sports, fashion, cooking, health, and games.

In addition to texting, customers can also initiate voice calls with their contacts, from within the ayoba app. The call will be charged as a standard voice call using the customers’ available airtime or minutes.

The app is available for download on Google Play store.
