What is Coke Studio Africa?

Coke Studio is a one of a kind music show that brings artists from different genres, eras and regions together to create a modern and authentic African sound through musical fusion. Coke Studio Africa show is produced by Coca-Cola Central, East and West Africa.

What is the idea behind the show?

One of the lingering tensions on the African continent is the lack of interaction, collaboration and cooperation among artistes. Coke Studio Africa seeks to break down those barriers through music.

Why is Coca-Cola focusing on music?

Music is a universal language and key expression of all emotions including happiness andCoca-Cola is the universal Icon of Happiness.Coca-Colaaspires to engage teens through the concept of musical fusion and artist collaboration and on a much larger scale, spread the happiness message through fusion.

What is the theme for this year?

The theme for this year is AFRICAN COLLABORATIONS, GREAT FUSIONS.

What is the format of the show for this season?

Season 2 comprises eight 45 minute episodes and one double length 90 minute episode. Every show will feature live musical performances as well as a variety of segments including behind the music, artist competitions, challenges and special remixes.

Where is Coke Studio Africa shot?

Coke Studio is shot at Film Studios in Nairobi, Kenya.

Who is the main target audience?

The main target is teens but the show will also appeal to adults.

How are the artists chosen?

The artists are chosen using the following criteria:

  • All from key countries featured i.e. Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique
  • Are all stars with strong youth equity
  • Have a strong recent catalogue of music which appeals to the youth
  • Are all strong music talents
  • Have similar objectives to Coke Studio Africa i.e. they want to grow their profile beyond their home countries and are interested in both collaborating with another artist, and in the concept of fusion

How many songs have been recorded for Season 2?

There are 48 songs that have been recorded.

Which music producers are involved in Season 2?

Six key producers were brought in to support the production of the music on Coke Studio. These are:

  • Silvastone (Ghana)
  • Chopstix (Nigeria)
  • Afrologic (Nigeria)
  • Kevin Provoke (Kenya)
  • KagweMungai (Kenya)
  • OwuorArunga (Kenya/US)

Who is the Unknown DJ on Coke Studio?

The Unknown DJ featured on Coke Studio is a mysterious character who crosses genre and style boundaries. It was rumored he was born in a recording studio whilst James Brown performed, but we could not possibly comment. It was also rumored that the only language he speaks comprises of music notes, and that he can only communicate using a Serato Nexus 4. He is signed to a major US record label and if his sound library is to be believed, has worked with an incredible range of US stars including Drake and Jay-Z, but again, we cannot comment.

Who are the other DJ’s featured on the show?

The show will begin airing on Saturday, 13th September on Local Channel

Although the show will air on TV, it will be highly driven on various digital platforms. Fans will be able to get content from the show on the official website, www.cokestudioafrica.com.They can also get updates on the show and join the conversation through the Coke Studio Africa Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Season one included Grammy award winners such as Salif Keita from Mali and King Sunny Ade from Nigeria. Other popular artists who took part were MI, Waje, Jimmy Jatt and Bez from Nigeria; Octopizzo, Miss Karun and Just a Band from Kenya; Hip Hop Pantsula, and Tumi from South Africa; BoddhiSatva from the Central African Republic; Diamond Platinumz and Lady Jaydee from Tanzania; Joel Sebunjo, Qwela and Lillian Mbabazi from Uganda; and the Culture Music Club from Zanzibar. 

Which artists have returned for Season 2?

The artists that have returned for Season 2 are Waje from Nigeria, Lillian Mbabazi from Uganda, and Tanzania’s Diamond.

Where did the Coke Studio concept originate?

The concept originates from the Brazilian show, Estúdio Coca-Cola which first aired in March 2007.

Where else has Coke Studio been produced and aired?

Coke Studio has been produced and aired in the Middle East, Pakistan and India. In Pakistan, it was especially successful with an estimated 77 million views on YouTube alone.
