Protector Heathens added another trophy to their cabinet over the weekend after winning their 8th Uganda cup. The early 2000’s tournament dominants were re-crowned champions of the Nile Special Uganda Rugby Cup on Saturday when they beat last year’s winners, the Kobs 10-8.
Heathens head coach, Brian Tabaruka hailed the performance of his side on the evening and all throughout the tournament since its started back in July. He attributed their Uganda cup victory to the loss of the league title to Kobs and the 7s’ circuit to Buffaloes earlier in the season.
“When I told you that we shall do all it takes to win the title, it was not just to please you but I had seen it during the training and the mood in the camp,” Tabaruka said after the game.
Kobs took the lead through James Ijongat’s penalty but the Heathens leveled it to 3-3 before the second half through Phillip Wokorach. Kobs, the hosts who appeared stronger at the start of the second half continued to push and their efforts paid off well with an 8-3 lead after a try by center Brian Asaba. Heathens however didn’t just sit back as they regrouped to mount pressure on the hosts, playing in their half and engineered a try through Jasper Ochen and a conversion by Phillip Wokorach in the dying minutes of the game to secure their eight Uganda cup title.
Erick Wabwire, John Sairo, Edie Kiwanuka and Dr.Sam Guma were the four fans that won a fully paid trip to Dubai to watch the HSBC Rugby 7s series this year.
