We all know how we feel in ourselves when we orgasm (er, GREAT), but have you ever thought about the absolute fireworks that go off inside our brains when we reach climax?
If you have, you’re in luck, because a group of scientists from Rutgers University asked a bunch of lucky ladies to stimulate themselves sexually while in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. Because what could be sexier than getting yourself off inside a scanner in a science lab? They’d best have been playing Magic Mike on repeat, that’s all I’m saying.
Anyway, these fMRI scanners recorded the magic as it happened, and have put it into a video for us to watch. And it’s pretty mesmerising. The brain goes from all chilled out to chaos and excitement with reds and oranges and yellows and bloody hell that felt great.
Lead researcher Barry Komisaruk told IFL Science how valuable the research actually was: “It turned out to be the world’s first evidence of where orgasms occur in women’s brains,” he said, which isn’t where scientists had previously thought it did.
While it’s always been assumed that our orgasm reaches the brain via a signal travelling up our spinal chord, it turns out that it actually gets there through a long nerve called the vagus nerve (nice name) that extends into the pelvis.
