The relevant government authorities in Uganda will start mapping out a scheme in which the Cranes players start getting a monthly stipend.
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Ugandan President, ordered on Tuesday that the players should be given a monthly stipend which will help them buy food and remain strong to perform better.
The President, who boasted that he played football actively when he was still a young man, added that it will not require lots of money to look after the team.
“Let the authorities go back and draw plans on how we shall handle this payment of players every month,” said the President.
The President added that they should also come up with a plan on how to reward the team when they win a trophy in the African events or in the world.
“I have already proposed that for athletes any gold medal won in Africa and around the world is $2000, while a silver medal will be worth a $1200 and a bronze $500,” added Museveni.
Last weekend the President rewarded athlete Stephen Kiprotich with a Mistubishi Pajero and promised to build him a three bedroomed house after he won the 42km marathon at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Charles Bakkabulindi, the State Minister for Sports, told MTNFootball.com that they will make sure that a system is drawn quickly that will ensure the Cranes players get paid what the President proposed.
“This government is very committed to improving sports and with more attention and various sporting disciplines, we shall win more medals and also qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup someday,” added Bakkabulindi.
Cranes skipper Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, who guided the team to qualification for the 2014 Africa Nations Championship to be held in South Africa, said paying players a month stipend will motivate them to work harder.
