The government of Uganda has today Wednesday, February 10, 2021 fully restored internet services especially social media after almost a month under shutdown.

The official announcement came through the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, Peter Ogwang’s official Twitter handle.

  • Hon. Peter Ogwang

In his statement Hon. Ogwang apologized for the incovieniences that arouse during the internet shutdown though he revealed it was called for purposes of national security.

He also cautioned users to be constructive with the services rather than being destructive consumers and social media users.

“Internet and Social media services have been fully restored. We apologize for the inconveniences caused, but it was for the security of our country. Let’s be constructive, NOT destructive consumers/users of social media,” reads a tweet from Hon. Peter Ogwang.

Government curbed internet a day before the general elections in January 2021 after citing it as an avenue of promoting violence in the country.

It was restored four days later but social media remained forbidden by law in Uganda under the same reasons stated by government not until today when everything has been brought back to life.
