For Mugumya Sparen, better known as Sparen Talker, making people laugh has grown into more than just a hobby. It has become a career, a source of income and a way of connecting with people in Uganda and beyond.
Born in Ntungamo District in western Uganda, Sparen turned to content creation after realising that comedy and music could give him a platform to showcase his talent. He often uses a popular slogan “ I can assure you”, in his skits.
He was particularly inspired by comedians and content creators William Last KRM and Mickey Seems, whose work encouraged him to give content creation a shot.
“They were too funny, and I thought I could be even better,” Sparen says.
He started creating comedy skits and sharing them on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. With time, his videos began attracting attention and building him a following online. But for Sparen, the journey has been about more than likes, views and followers.
Content creation has also helped him raise money to pay his university tuition at Kampala International University Western Campus. He says the income from his work has also enabled him to make investments in Uganda.
The journey has come with another benefit which is meeting people. Through content creation, Sparen has made friends and built connections both within Uganda and outside the country.
Still, what matters most to him is the simple reason he started in the first place: making people laugh. “Above all, I have been able to make people laugh through my creative skits and videos online,” he says.
And he is not planning to stop at Uganda. Over the next five years, Sparen wants to grow his brand beyond the country’s borders and compete on the African stage. His biggest ambition is to become the best content creator in Africa.
From Ntungamo to TikTok, Sparen’s journey shows how a simple talent for making people laugh can turn into a serious career when given the right platform.
