Internationally acclaimed Afro Fusion Band, Freshly Ground will be headlining at the eighth edition of Blankets and Wine Kampala happening on December 14, 2014 alongside Uganda’s best afro-pop and afro-fusion acts.
The eighth edition of the premier Afro-based musical festival sponsored by Tusker Malt Lager will be held at its proverbial home, the Uganda Museum with scintillating performances lined up from Uganda’s Ekky, Michael Kitanda, Mun*G and the main act, Freshly Ground.
This time round, as has been the norm, the show will be bigger and better with Tusker Malt Lager raising the bar and delivering a unique and unforgettable experience by blending jazz, local hip-hop and the biggest contemporary acts like Freshly Ground.
Formed in 2002, Freshly Ground’s musical style blends elements of traditional South African music (such as Kwela and African folk music), blues, jazz, and features of indie rock.The band is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe is fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola.
The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) and Josh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith.
Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave a musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy.
“We have an array of activities lined up this time round to keep our revelers glued more than ever this time round, music lovers will be happy to note that we are always on the lookout for the best in the entertainment industry. The blend of the music genres this time suits the mood as we head into the festive period,” Tusker Malt Lager Brand Manager, Phoebe Nakabazzi says.
Freshly Ground has worked on a number of music projects, making a mark worldwide with their soothing ballads. The group teamed up with Shakira among other artistes to produce the official 2010 World Cup hit theme song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) when the tournament was hosted for the first time in Africa.
Performance of their major hits like Doo Bee Doo and Potbellythat are popular among Ugandans will offer the perfect Sunday outing. Micheal Kitanda, Ekky, MunG will be sharing the same stage with the talented South African Band.
Micheal Kitanda will without a doubt move the crowds with his soothing and amazing saxophone touch, silky voiced Ekky will add a soul touch while Mun*G will bring in the energy will his ‘lugaflow’ rhymes.
The event kicks off at 1:00pm on Sunday 14th December, 2014. Online advance tickets are on sale via www.easyticket.co.ugand at UGX 50,000; and on the event day,revelers will pay with UGX 75,000 at the gate. Tickets are available at all Uganda Wines and Spirits Distributors retail stores.
Blankets and Wine is a quarterly, picnic style music festival that started two years ago and has grown steadily to one of the most eagerly awaited for music events in Kampala. It is an opportunity to come discover a rare but yet very unique intriguing music environment.
“This is the ultimate Blankets and Wine experience. We will have the live Art Hive Gallery showcasing great works, a museum tour for that will be attending.
