Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Gheorghe Popescu has been jailed for three years for tax evasion and money laundering.
Popescu, who was tipped to become Romania’s FA chairman, is amongst eight football officials who have been handed prison sentences.
The former PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Galatasaray and Spurs defender was sentenced to three years and one month in jail.
The 46-year-old, who was named the Romanian player of the year on six occasions, was among the favourites to become president of the domestic football federation.
Popescu was capped 115 times by Romania and is considered as one of the country’s best ever players.
