Gabriel Epenu, a prominent figure in Uganda’s media landscape during the mid-2000s, remains embroiled in a challenging journey to recovery following a tragic accident over a decade ago.
The former NTV news anchor’s life took a devastating turn in 2013 when he was involved in a fatal motor accident in Seeta, Mukono district, leaving him bedridden and in a coma.
In 2021, concerns regarding Epenu’s health resurfaced in the media, with him and his family attributing the lack of financial resources as a significant hindrance to his full recovery.
Natasha Epenu, his sister, disclosed that the accident inflicted severe damage to Epenu’s brain cells, particularly affecting the left hemisphere, resulting in impairments to his memory, speech, movements, and sight.
Furthermore, Epenu suffered brain trauma on the left side, leading to partial paralysis.
Natasha Epenu elaborated, “That is why he has difficulty in physical movement, speech, and memory,” shedding light on the extensive challenges her brother faces in his day-to-day life.
Recent reports indicate that Epenu, currently residing in Sonde, has developed mental complications and has reportedly become dependent on morphine and other drugs.
Despite his illustrious career in the news industry, Epenu is also remembered for his public relationship with Ugandan female artist Iryn Namubiru.
As the plight of off-the-scene celebrities like Epenu often fades from public attention over the years, there is a collective hope for him to receive the necessary support and care.
It is imperative that Epenu’s ongoing struggles are acknowledged and that efforts are made to provide him with the assistance he needs for his continued recovery and well-being.
