This morning, the political landscape of Uganda mourns the loss of Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, a dedicated Member of Parliament since 1996, who passed away at the age of 77 after succumbing to cancer.
Often referred to as the “Iron Lady,” Ogwal gained recognition for her unwavering criticism of the regime and government throughout her political career.
Cecilia Ogwal’s legacy in Ugandan politics is profound. She played a pivotal role as one of the delegates in the Constituent Assembly and served as the Member of Parliament for Lira from 1996 to 2005.
Her political journey continued when she became a strong steward for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and later joined the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) after a falling out with the former. In 2006, she contested and successfully became the Woman MP for Dokolo District.
Both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have eulogized Ogwal as an instrumental figure in guiding and shaping the political sphere in Uganda. Her fearless criticism and commitment to democratic principles left a lasting impact on the country’s political discourse.
Beyond her political achievements, Cecilia Ogwal was crowned Miss Uganda in 1969 at the age of 23.
At that time, she was a Bachelor of Commerce finalist at the East African University in Nairobi. Her diverse accomplishments showcase her multifaceted personality and the breadth of her influence.
Sadly, Cecilia Ogwal breathed her last in India, where she was undergoing treatment for cancer.
