Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar

FINALLY! Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday, February 28. DiCaprio snagged the trophy for Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in The Revenant.

The long-awaited win — he’s been nominated six times total – was surely a surreal moment for the actor, who received a standing ovation while making his way towards the stage.

“Thank you all so much … The Revenant was a product of the tireless efforts of the cast and crew I got to work alongside,” DiCaprio, 41, told the crowd, before thanking his costar Tom Hardy for his fierceness on screen and for his “friendship off screen.”

The environmentalist also addressed climate change during his speech. “Climate change is real it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species. We need to work together to stop procrastinating,” DiCaprio continued. “Let us not take this planet for granted, I do not take tonight for granted.”

In The Revenant, DiCaprio portrays 19th-century American frontiersman Hugh Glass, who is left for dead by his comrades after being mauled by a bear.

Fans have been rooting for DiCaprio to have his big moment ever since the Wolf of Wall Street actor lost the 2014 Oscar to Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey snagged Best Actor for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.
