Facebook is introducing a new audio recognition feature to its mobile app, which identifies music, television shows and movies.

The Shazam-like option uses the smartphone’s microphone to retrieve data and posts the details in a status to share with friends – although it is limited to US users at present.

Identifying a song posts a 30-second preview of the track, while blasting sound from a television show will link to its official Facebook page in your status, as well as the season and episode number.

The feature serves as an extension to the feelings and activity-sharing option, which has been used some 5 billion times since its arrival last year.

Users have to opt-in for audio recognition, and it can be used by clicking an audio icon moving on-screen when writing a status update. If audio detection is left on, it will attempt to detect a match as a status is being written.

Audio recognition is rolling out to Android and iOS users in the US over the coming weeks.
