Facebook Has a Quarter of a Trillion User Photos

In a white paper shared by Facebook Monday morning about Internet.org, the company’s campaign to get the entire world online, Facebook also shared some interesting information about the size of its photo library.

Facebook users have uploaded more than 250 billion photos to the site, and currently averages 350 million uploads per day, according to the white paper. (For comparison, Flickr users upload 3.5 million photos every day, its head of product told The Verge, and the site has 8 billion in total.)

Photo uploads aren’t the only aspect of the social network that generates heavy traffic. Facebook reported that users share 4.75 billion “content items” per day — including posts, comments, videos, photos, and status updates. Users generate more than 4.5 billion Likes each day, and send more than 10 billion messages.

Facebook had just 100 billion photo uploads around mid-2011. The photo uploads seem to be growing exponentially alongside the site’s user total. Here’s how 350 million photos per day looks in smaller increments of time:

  • 14.58 million photo uploads per hour.
  • 243,000 photo uploads per minute.
  • 4,000 photo uploads per second.

The new figure is even more impressive when you consider that Facebook has 1.15 billion users — meaning each user averages slightly more than 217 photo uploads apiece. Facebook, a company that has always put an emphasis on how users upload and engage with photos (which is why it bought Instagram), continues to enhance the visual experience on the site.

Last month, Facebook unveiled Shared Photo Albums, a new feature that allows multiple users to upload pictures to the same album.
