Facebook to add more African languages

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, says more African languages will be added to the social media platform to make it easier for African’s to access the social network’s applications reports DW.

According to Nigerian media, Zuckerberg pledged to use more Nigerian languages in offering services on Facebook during his business visit in the West African nation. Facebook currently allows the use of Hausa language –A popular language in Nigeria and West Africa.

“I am glad we support Hausa and we are planning on supporting a lot more languages soon.’’ Zuckerberg is quoted as saying by the Premium Times.

Facebook currently supports languages like Hausa, Kiswahili, Somali and Arabic on its platform. More than 125 million people in Africa use Africa use the internet, especially among the people aged between 15 and 25 years.

Nigeria tops the leagues table of Facebook users in sub- Saharan Africa, with more than 15 million users, followed by South Africa and Kenya with thirteen and five million users respectively according to Internet World Stats

However, Facebook plans to launch a satellite that will extend Internet access to rural parts of Africa has been halted after a rocket carrying the satellite busted into flames.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has other technologies such as Aquilla (referring to the solar-powered plane being developed by Facebook) to make the internet available in remote areas.
