A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a senior government official, to eight years in prison for embezzlement, just months after he became notorious worldwide following the leak of explicit sex tapes involving him and other officials’ wives.

The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds meant for professional travel expenses and using them for personal gain, according to Hilario Mitogo, press director of the country’s supreme court.
Engonga, who was the head of the national financial investigation agency at the time of his arrest, was charged alongside five other senior officials for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funds in the oil-rich central African nation.
Widely known by the nickname “Bello”, Engonga first captured international headlines in November 2024 when a series of sex tapes — some filmed inside his office at the Ministry of Finance — surfaced on social media while he was already in detention awaiting trial.
The provincial court not only handed him an eight-year jail term but also imposed a fine of $220,000.
