Patrick Kato age 43, Born in Uganda and fled to Sweden in a bid to seek for asylum in Sweden in 2019, after experiencing homophobic attacks and rejection from his own family members who described his sexuality as unacceptable.
“He has always been a bad boy. When he started getting involved in politics, he became difficult to deal with. You can’t fight this system and win. I even warned him, but he refused to listen. When asked about his son’s ordeal, his mother, Josephine Nanteza, from Mukono, His biological mother Nanteza, in an interview, she confirmed that she doesn’t have anything to do with a gay son who went against all traditional beliefs of their culture, I don’t think I still have a son, I actually don’t want to see him here” I am told he is a NUP mobilzer in Sweden. We don’t have anything to do with him because we don’t want to get involved in his trouble and government.” his mother said in an interview with Dean Lubowa Saava.
However, even the family got shocked when they got to know the story that their son Kato, was dating a one Chris Mubiru, and one of their hangouts was Club One Kampala, before Patrick Kato flew the country.
As if this was not enough for him before fleeing the country, Kato had also developed serious misunderstandings with his family members, who felt that his joining the then opposition People Power movement, which later morphed into a political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), was a serious betrayal of their family against the government.
Kato’s ordeal is not isolated. His story comes just weeks after a Turkey-based Ugandan blogger, Fred Kajubi, alias Lumbuye, who announced President Museveni’s death on social media, was freed from custody where he had spent months.
Upon hearing about his pending deportation, his family has reportedly vowed to report him to the authorities and have him arrested should he return to them.
Sources close to him say his fears are that once deported, he’ll be detained and face torture for his sexual orientation and association with NUP as it’s on record that Uganda is among the countries that are not giving freedom to gay rights.
