East Africa Development Bank marks 50 years

Published

on

Dr. Mbui Wagacha, Former Senior Economic Advisor to the Office of the President (left) and Mahesh Kotecha, EADB Advisory Council Member (right) have a chat during the East African Development Bank Conference held in Kampala, Uganda.

This year, East African Development Bank clocks half a century excelling in being the leading development finance institution for member states. It marks the 50th year when the bank first opened its door for business. With primary focus on interventions in food security, infrastructure, education, health, natural resources, environment and regional integration. Since its establishment in 1967, the bank has remitted financial and other support to its member states.

In contrast to other development finance institutions, EADB has over the five decades successfully adapted to an industry in complete transformation, owing to the bank’s strategy of promoting sustainable socio-economic development in East Africa. In 1977, the bank suffered a scare of extinction after the collapse of East African Community due to operational and ideological differences between member states. The Bank was later reenacted by the signing of the Arusha Accord, which divided the assets of the former EAC and agreed that EADB should operate as a joint East African institution.

Ssewa Ssewa unveiled the “Janzi” instrument, a music invention that is purely Ugandan.

Performing at the event were icons such as Kenneth Mugabi and Michael Ouma. Mugabi put up an amazing performance as he did his Nakki song getting the crowd to cheer on in amazement.

Ouma then joined Ssewa Ssewa on stage. It was one of the finest moments as the greats shared the stage. Earlier on, Ssewa Ssewa had done an improvisation of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’ with a former boss of his at Qwela band.

The history of the Janzi music instrument all started when Ssewa Ssewa got an idea of a two scale music instrument. It is this idea that he threw to a group of carpenters and together they created a completely new music instrument. It was an instrument that arose out of the adungu and took on a life of its own.

At the event, Lt. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba represented by Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda pledged 40 million towards the Janzi. The Janzi will be displayed in the Ugandan museum as a true testament of the rich Ugandan culture.

Ssewa Ssewa took out time to thank his mother and lovely wife. It was such a sweet moment when mother and son shared a dance on the stage.

The historical launch of the Janzi instrument was sponsored by Tusker Malt Lager aka TML. TML has pledged to continue keeping it real while supporting real Ugandan music.
