Drake is facing a lawsuit over two cancelled tour dates.
The rapper and his touring company OVO have allegedly failed to pay back $200,000 (£153,000) to a Chicago concert promoter after cancelling two shows in 2012.
Status Entertainment is suing Drake and his company, claiming that he pulled out of an agreed-upon gig after they had paid him an initial $100,000 up front of a $250,000 fee in March 2012.
“The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone 7 with fellow tweeps. Entrance is 15,000shs. Call 0775439894 for details. Great music and drinks.”
OVO Touring Company said they would return the payment, but have failed to do so, according to court documents filed last week, reports SPIN.
Drake then headlined another concert in June 2012 with a rival promoter at a bigger venue, which apparently gained the company somewhere between $340k to $1 million based on ticket pricing.
Status claims that it subsequently approached Drake for a show in October 2012 at the Allstate Arena and paid his company just over $100,000 up front, with gross ticket revenue estimated at between $740,000 and $2.3 million.
However, Drake’s team apparently responded that they had “changed the price because our value went up”, meaning Status wanted to pull out of the deal.
Status requested its second payment back and was promised a refund, but alleges that it has yet to receive the money, despite a lawyer’s “e-mail[s], text message[s], and phone calls”.
The promoter cites breach of contract, conversion, unjust enrichment fraud, quantum meruit and violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
