Uganda Cranes number one goalie, Dennis Masinde Onyango is struggling to regain his fitness ahead of Sunday’s crucial tie against Comoros in the 2017 AFCON Qualifiers at Namboole.
Onyango sustained an injury last weekend as he featured for his South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns during their win against SuperSport United in a cup tournament.
The injury saw him left out of the playing squad that shared the spoils with the Harambe Stars of Kenya in a goalless draw at Namboole on Tuesday in an international friendly.
The worrying situation of the first choice goalkeeper was confirmed by the Uganda Cranes coach, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic as he spoke to local newspaper, the Daily Monitor.
“We have put him under special regime and a late fitness test will determine his availability,” coach Micho said before adding that, “no match is bigger than a player and his career. We shall take care of him and see what will unfold.”
Should Onyango remain unfit to play, El Merriek’s Salim Jamaal Magoola will be available to take the stands while Vipers’ Ismail Watenga and KCCA’s Benjamin Ochan are also next in line to fill that void.
