David Lutalo has explained why some musicians, including himself, do not always attend or perform at their fellow artists’ concerts, saying invitations and proper planning should come first.
Lutalo said musicians often support each other by performing at fellow artists’ concerts without demanding payment. However, he believes an artist should formally invite colleagues they want to see or perform at their shows instead of expecting every musician to attend automatically.
According to Lutalo, musicians also have their own concerts where they invite specific colleagues depending on the programme and roles they are expected to play.
“We sing for our fellow musicians for free. You cannot ask your fellow musician for money to sing at their concert, but one should also take responsibility and invite me if they need me because we also hold concerts and invite the people we need. It is not that you have to go to every concert.
“They have to invite you. You cannot just take yourself there without a programme. I believe that is what everyone should do because if you do not have a programme, why are you going there? It is like a wedding or any other function. If they have not invited you, you have no business going there.”
