Uganda Cranes number one goalie Dennis Masinde Onyango scooped the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) award of best sports personality for the month of October.
The Mamelodi Sundowns custodian who recently became the first Ugandan to ever win the CAF Champions League was voted on Monday during the body’s monthly gathering at Lugogo Tennis Court Hotel.
Onyango’s Sundowns outclassed Egypt’s Zamalek by 3-1 on aggregate after two legs to win the continent’s most prestigious trophy in club football.
He beat Zone V club champions City Oilers and 2016 National Pool champion Sula Matovu to the accolade that comes along with a cash prize of Shs500,000.
Onyango won by 675 votes while City Oilers came second with 470 votes. The basketball team made history when they became the second Ugandan team to win the Zone V title after Falcons.
In third place with 465 votes was the Uganda Golf team who recently won their third consecutive East African Golf Challenge title in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while pool table star Sula Matovu came in fourth place with 330 votes.
USPA members also honoured fallen sports journalist Andrew Patrick Luwandga and commended kick-boxer Moses Golola for his recent success in Kenya as well as Heathens (rugby club) for wining Uganda Cup and Flavia Namukula who won the 2016 Uganda Ladies Golf Open.
