The High Court in Kampala has nullified the election of Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, following a successful petition by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Faridah Nambi.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Bernard Namanya, the court ruled that the by-election held in March 2025 failed to comply with the Parliamentary Elections Act. The judge noted that the irregularities significantly affected the outcome of the vote, prompting the annulment of Luyimbazi’s election.
“That the election of Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola as a directly elected Member of Parliament for Kawempe Division North constituency in Kampala District is set aside,” Justice Namanya stated in the ruling. He further declared the parliamentary seat vacant and directed the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh election.
Nambi’s petition highlighted several electoral malpractices, including the failure of the Electoral Commission to return results from multiple polling stations—an omission that allegedly disenfranchised thousands of voters.
She also accused Luyimbazi’s campaign team of engaging in voter bribery, illegal campaigning, and obstructing voters and election officials.
The Kawempe North by-election was triggered by the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and was marked by heightened political tensions, heavy security deployment, and allegations of violence and intimidation, particularly against supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP).
