In Uganda’s creative industry, comedy has proven to be growing each year and for the last 10 years, the industry has seen growth. Many comedians have grown from small brands to big brands. Who knew that Mc Kash Owakabi could once in a while sit down with Dr Hillary to plan something big for the comedy industry?
Last Friday, MC Kash, Dr Hillary took Kenyan top and most celebrated comedian to the North making a stop at Bomah Hotel located in Gulu city. Eric Omondi besides his usual performance at Comedy store was this time in Gulu at the weekly show known as Laugh with Owakabi organized by Comedian MC Kash every Friday.
The edition with Omondi and Dr Hillary attracted a full house with the show kicking off at 6pm with a live band and with curtain raisers being the comedians from Gulu town. These included Ojur kwon, Banana Joe, slender boy and many more. They did their jokes in Acholi since they were in a common ground where everyone understood the language.
Dr Hillary performed plenty of jokes that left the audience in a bout of uncontrollable laughter, among these was a joke about how women enjoy the club more than men saying women have freedom in the club as they can even dance with one another, but men would never do the same in Uganda. Dr Hillary started comedy in 2017 when he took part in a comedy competition organized by Comedy files in 2017 led by Sebakigye Emma at Theatre Labonita in Kampala. In the competition he made it to the best top 5 and got an opportunity to perform for the audience on their weekly TV show that aired on NBS TV. That became his first ever big stage for a stand-up performance and recently, he sold out his One Man comedy show dubbed Laugh at My People at National Theatre.
Eric Omondi who was the biggest highlight of the night closed the night with a stellar performance, doing jokes about how American rappers like Drake throw their chains to the audience while performing on stage but in Uganda, an artiste throws the chain and jewelry to his manager who is behind him.
The host of the night, Mc Kash said that he chose Omondi for the Gulu show as an international act because he’s good at Comedy and the fact that he was celebrating 5 years of Laugh with Owakabi, he needed to add weight to that particular edition. “He is the greatest Jaluo that means his attachments to North is special. He is amongst the great guys that represent East Africa to the world” Mc Kash said.
