Cindy, Naava Grey to headline the 2018 Oktoberfest

The world’s largest beer and food festival, the Oktoberfest, is back for its fourth edition in Kampala, promising a cocktail of food, beer and fun for city dwellers come Saturday, September 29.

The annual event which will be hosted at the Uganda Museum Gardens will be headlined by local music stars, Cindy Sanyu and Naava Grey. There will also be performances from flutist Siima Sabiti and singer Afrie, in addition to a DJ showcase by The Almost Famous DJs featuring DJ Mary Joe and DJ Xzyl.

According to Mark Kaheru of My Food Network, the event organisers, this year’s edition is aimed at celebrating women with its theme “Divas edition” hence the an all-female line-up.

He also noted that, “The Oktoberfest has become a tradition that celebrates the friendship between German and Ugandan cultures and has become an important merrymaking event for many.”

As has become the tradition, the Ugandan version of the fiesta will entail celebrations of food, blends of different cultures and merrymaking. The event will feature a mix of friendly inter-cultural activities including wardrobe fun costume competitions overseen by a team of judges headed by former German Ambassador Klaus Holderbaum.

There will also be traditional Oktoberfest games such as a beer straw challenge, tug-of-war, beer pong, arm wrestling, Stein (beer glass) hoisting challenge, eating challenge, beer speed drinking.

“Beer has always been the uniting factor at social gatherings for Ugandans. We celebrate our friendships by sharing Tusker Lite and the Oktoberfest is an opportunity for the German and Ugandan cultures to share and connect over amazing food, excellent beer and lots of fun,” said Grace Namutebi, UBL Brand Manager, Premium Beers.

Tickets are available on discount when purchased using Visa card or Mastercard under the Blue Weekends promotion with Stanbic Bank. For those paying cash, tickets will be sold at only Shs20,000. Gates open at noon.

Photos: MC Esco unveils own night

Ugandan musicians have a new platform to showcase their music. This follows the launch of a new theme night hosted by Mc Esco.

Last Friday, the renowned media personality and events emcee unveiled his own night dubbed “TGIF”. The night which is hosted at Rock Bar is themed around local music and featured Deejays Malik and Starboy. It attracted a host of revelers who were treated to a cocktail of Ugandan music from past hits to recent chart-toppers.

According to Esco, the theme night is putting emphasis on boosting local talent and it will be strictly playing Ugandan music only.

This night is expected to be welcomed with open warms from Ugandan music lovers as well artistes who have in the past decried lack of ample airplay of their music in local nightclubs and media.

Uninvited Bobi Wine turns up at Chameleone Saba Saba concert

The recently concluded Chameleone Legend Saba Saba concert attracted masses from all corners in and around town and it is not surprising that fellow artiste Bobi Wine who was not expected turned up to witness the much anticipated concert.Bobi Wine arrived at about 10:30PM in company of about 15 other people and made his way to the VIP section. Chameleone who was on stage at first ignored him and continued his performance to another three songs before thanking Bobi Wine for unexpectedly showing up. “Thank you Bobi Wine for turning up.” Chameleone then asked all people wearing red beret to put them off as he invited Bobi Wine on stage. “This is not a political show and all people wearing Red beret kindly remove them for the moment”Chameleone requested.Bobi Wine then stepped on stage and the pair mocked each other about their past which was full of fist fights but above all congratulated eachother for building and sustaining the music industry thus far. “You put about 1000 bricks on this mighty wall of Ugandan music industry” Chameleone praised Bobi Wine.Bobi Wine then perfomed his Kyarenga alongside Chameleone. A playful Chameleone mocked Bobi Wine by removing his red beret off his head” they played about.

Female Ugandan writer wins big at International Literature Awards

Female Ugandan writer, Harriet Anena won big yesterday after walking away with the Wole Soyinka prize for Literature at the Monson centre, Onikan in Lagos Nigeria.

Established by the Luminor foundation in honor of Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in literature, Wole Soyinka, the Pan African writing prize worth 10,000 USD is awarded every two years to the best literary works produced by an African.

Ms.Anena won the award jointly with Professor Tanure Ojaide,a Nigerian writer who authored “Songs of myself” while Harriet Anena on the other hand authored, “ A nation in Labour,” a collection of poems that talk about Uganda being entangled in a political conflict since independence causing the citizens “labour pains.”She also explores her encounter as a child during the LRA insurgency war.

“Super happy to be the joint winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa 2018, for my book, “A Nation In Labour” she tweeted

A total of 110 submissions were submitted from over 11 countries in Africa.
