Chimpanzee Trust Uganda is administering contraceptives to female chimps to control the population at Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The sanctuary, which seats on an Island measuring 100 acres is home to more than 45 chimpanzees. Despite the fact that the sanctuary seems big, Conservationists believe it cannot accommodate more Chimpanzees.
While Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary is not a permanent home for the Chimpanzee, it takes a long time for them to be relocated to the wilderness. As a result, Chimpanzee Trust Uganda is administering contraceptives to the female chimpanzees, to prevent them from conceiving and adding onto the existing numbers. A total of 24 adult female chimpanzees were administered implants to stop them from conceiving.
Evelyn Nalumu, the Information Officer at Chimpanzee Trust says apart from controlling the population of the chimpanzees to ensure they fit within the available space, they also limit their numbers because they don’t have sufficient resources to feed them.
