Despite missing two games in the group stages, Uganda Cranes left back Godfrey Walusimbi was the hero as Gor Mahia edged South Sudanese side Malakia 2-1 to reach the semi-finals of this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup.
Two first half goals from the left back were enough for Gor Mahia to knock out Malakia. In the fourth minute of the game, Walusimbi defined K’Ogalo’s intentions in the game when he put them in the lead.
Malakia failed to tame the high temple of the game on which Gor Mahia were launching their attacks and three minutes to the half hour mark, Walusimbi made no mistake punishing them for the second time as he netted his second of the game.
Despite trailing 2-0 by half-time, Malakia were not ready to give up the fight just yet. Upon returning into the second half, Thomas Jacob who had earlier in the first half hit the woodwork made no mistake in the second half as he scored Malakia’s only consolation goal to make it 2-1 though it wasn’t enough to earn them a slot at the semifinals.
Gor Mahia will play Khartoum in the semifinals on Friday, the two sides shared the spoils in a one-all draw when they met in the group stages.
