IT’S one thing to check your Facebook feed regularly, but fundamentally stupid to do it in the house you’ve just burgled – and not log out.
But that’s just what halfwit Nicholas Wig, 26, did after he reportedly broke into the home of James Wood last week and trousered cash, credit cards, a watch and a mobile phone.
Not content with his haul , Wig could not resist logging in to Mr Woods’ computer to check Facebook.
When the victim returned home in St Paul, Minnesota, he found his house ransacked and a pile of damp clothes left behind by Wig who got wet in the rain.
“I started to panic,” he said.
“But then I noticed he had pulled up his Facebook profile.”
Wig had failed to log out after using Mr Wood’s computer, revealing exactly who was to blame.
Mr Wood posted on Wig’s profile, saying his home had been burgled and left his phone number so people could call with information.
To Mr Wood’s surprise, Wig texted him later that day, agreeing to exchange a phone he had stolen for the damp clothes left behind at the house.
Heading home from a friend’s house, Mr Wood ran into Wig. He recognised him from his Facebook profile and immediately called police.
Mr Wood admitted that if Wig hadn’t left his Facebook page open, the police might never have found him.
Police arrested Wig wearing the watch he had stolen.
Wig could face 10 years in prison and a $20,000 (£11,800) fine if convicted.
He already has an extensive criminal record, with past counts of second degree burglary and a domestic assault misdemeanour.
Mr Wood described him as: “World’s dumbest criminal.”
