Body Language Lessons: Analysing the Museveni, Besigye Handshake

Renowned radio personality James Onen aka Fatboy analyses the body language in the historical Museveni handshake with Besigye.

“In my opinion the handshake was more of a “win” for Museveni than Besigye, in terms of PR. Besigye looks bad here because most of his rhetoric against Museveni is angry and emotional. He now looks compromised. It’s simple – I mean, how do you spend years accusing your opponent of being an evil dictator and yet when you meet him in public you’re all smiles? No, it doesn’t portray you as reasonable. It portrays you as being weak, inconsistent, and easily compromised. And probably duplicitous as well.

Museveni, on the other hand, through this picture reinforces the idea (or myth, depending on what your views on NRM are.. hahaha) that NRM is all inclusive. No wonder its being used in this pro-Museveni campaign poster below. Besigye should have simply acknowledged Museveni somberly instead of smiling like a girl with a crush when he came to shake his hand.”
