Bobi Wine is having the last laugh.
The self-proclaimed Ghetto President who has for long been criticized for remaining local after choosing to sing essentially for the common Ugandan will now feature in the highly anticipated Hollywood biographical sports drama dubbed “Queen of Katwe”.
While revealing that his singles, Ndi Muna Uganda and Kiwani, had been used in the movie, the singer used the opportunity to mock rival musicians who have invested heavily in going international. He said:
“I am proud to be part of this movie in two special ways.
1.My song with Nubian Li called #NdiMunaUganda is the first song you will hear when the movie starts. it plays over the Disney logo (one of the few times that has ever happened)
2.Am the only artiste to have a song featured on the Soundtrack that wasn’t in the film.(all songs on the sound track were in the film.) Kwegamba my Song #Kiwani was so good that it had to be included.
Kale nno ba ‘International’ artists bakuno, mbatumideko nti mujebale jemutuusako emimilo!
Nsigade ndi #LocaArtist wabwe, Kyagulanyi.”
Meanwhile, Queen of Katwe, which is set for release on 23rd September in USA, will premiere in Kampala on October 1st.
Based on a true story, “Queen of Katwe” is a biopic about a Ugandan chess prodigy who rises from the slums of Katwe to become a world chess champion. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stars as the mother of the chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi, who is portrayed by Madina Nalwanga.
