Ugandan singer, producer, and talent manager Benon Mugumbya has shed light on his decision to halt the release of new music, citing a shift in focus towards behind-the-scenes work.
Mugumbya, who gained prominence as one half of the duo “Benon & Vampos,” addressed his musical hiatus during a performance at the “Tusker Malt Conversessions,” where he shared insights into his career trajectory alongside his former music partner, Vampos.
Reflecting on his journey, Mugumbya emphasized that while he has not ceased singing altogether, his creative endeavors have taken a different direction. “I have never stopped singing. Singing is something you can never say you are done with. However, I am doing it in another context; like in my shower room and studio,” he remarked.
He suggested that a more pertinent question would be why he stopped releasing music as frequently, attributing this decision to a sense of unfulfillment. “I felt it was never fulfilling. I enjoyed and felt comfortable being in the background and creating stepping stones for other young artists out there,” Mugumbya explained.
The musical duo “Benon & Vampos” rose to prominence in the early 2000s, captivating audiences across the continent with their distinctive sound.
Notably, they are credited as the founders of Swangz Avenue, a renowned music label in Uganda. However, Vampos eventually parted ways with the group, leaving Mugumbya to navigate his solo career.
Currently, Mugumbya assumes the role of a music producer and manager at Swangz Avenue, based in Kampala’s industrial area.
His transition from performing artist to a behind-the-scenes figure underscores his dedication to nurturing emerging talents and contributing to the music industry’s growth.
As Mugumbya continues to shape the musical landscape through his work at Swangz Avenue, his insights provide a glimpse into the evolving dynamics of the Ugandan music scene.
While his personal creative journey may have taken a different path, his enduring passion for music remains a driving force in his professional endeavors.
