There has been a ban to certain songs within the Ugandan music industry because of their vulgarity.
As we all know, such songs clash with the kind of ethics that should be upheld by musicians in the music industry. Fingers have been pointed to musicians like Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo in the recent past.
Musician Bebe Cool has come out and gave his view regarding the highly discussed controversial songs within the music industry saying that it is good to be creative but there is a level of creativity that should be avoided at all costs.
“It is not simply about creativity. It is not simply about releasing a song out there. Yes, it may be a hit song and people loved it. But at what cost? It can be a hit song until it turns controversial, and it raises dust,” he stated.
Bebe Cool continued to say that musicians like Lil Pazo need to remember that there is a young generation out there listening to these songs so and it is prudent to tone down on the vulgarity to be able to make it to the big leagues with a clean image.
“There are young people out there taking in the music we feed them. One day if you listen to your kids saying vulgar words they heard in a song, you will wish they are not your kids. Lil Pazo needs to remember all this. And besides, there are the big leagues that everyone wants to join in the music industry. In the big leagues there is a lot of gate keeping. No one will want to keep around vulgarity in the big leagues,” Big Size added.
Bebe Cool further noted that even when the economy gets hard and musicians need to impress their fans, they should not resort to such means because they have a brand to build.
He gave an example of Gravity Omutujju and how he lost popularity with the big leagues because of vulgarity.
“Yes, the economy can get tough. I know that too. But even in such a tough economy, musicians should not resort to vulgarity to impress their fans. Musicians have a brand to build. One day all these things will come back to haunt them. Look at Gravity Omutujju. He was swimming in money while performing on ministerial events. But you all saw how that went down,” the Circumference singer remarked.
At the end of the day, musicians need to give their fans what they want, however, it is good to gatekeep what comes out of the studios into the fans’ ears.
