Bayern Munich’s stars visited the Vatican to meet the Pope on Wednesday, hours after thumping Roma 7-1 in the Champions League.

The German champions’ biggest ever away win saw them continue their 100 percent record in Group E and they celebrated in unique style.

After the win, Pep Guardiola’s men were granted an audience with Pope Francis, who claims to be a football fanatic and fan of Argentinean top flight side San Lorenzo. The team announced last month they will name their new stadium after their papal fan.

Bayern’s players were welcomed in open arms – despite the result – and handed over a signed shirt as a sign of their gratitute.

According to the Mail, the Pope praised Bayern’s showing at the Stadio Olimpico – telling the delegation they had played a “wonderful game” – although the margin of victory had taken him by surprise.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge presented the Pope with a signed Champions League match ball, which symbolised the promise of a friendly in the future – used for Bayern to donate €1million to a charity of the Vatican’s choice.
