Ugandan songstress Azawi has swiftly reacted to recent social media posts by singer Weasel Manizo, which are assumed to be directed towards her latest song “Masavu.”
Weasel, known as one half of the former singing duo Radio & Weasel, indirectly raised concerns about the origin of Azawi’s song, suggesting it may have been sourced from the unreleased archives of the late Mowzey Radio.
On Thursday, Weasel’s social media posts hinted at potential legal issues surrounding Azawi’s new track, alleging that it was unlawfully obtained from the late Mowzey Radio’s archived projects. Weasel’s confidence in his claims stems from reports indicating that Swangz Avenue, the studio associated with Azawi, had access to some of Radio’s records before his passing.
Adding fuel to the fire, Weasel threatened to release a demo of the alleged original song to substantiate his accusations.
The controversy erupted immediately following the release of Azawi’s “Masavu,” which contains lyrics attributed to the deceased singer.
Fans, particularly those of the former music duo, expressed concern over the authorization process for Azawi’s song, given its resemblance to unreleased material.
However, Azawi took to social media to address the accusations, shedding light on the song’s creation process.
Azawi clarified that “Masavu” was produced using IA technology, refuting any claims of impropriety in obtaining the song. In response to Weasel’s posts, Azawi labeled them as “classless” if they were indeed aimed at her record.
“If that post has anything to do with my record, then that’s absolutely so Classless!!” Azawi tweeted in response to Weasel’s statements.
The exchange between Azawi and Weasel has sparked widespread discussion within the Ugandan music scene, raising questions about intellectual property rights and the use of AI-generated content in the industry.
As the debate continues, both artists are expected to provide further clarification on the matter, with the spotlight firmly fixed on the integrity of Azawi’s latest release.
