ARSENAL have already held talks with Sami Khedira over a January move, according to reports in Spain.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was heavily linked with a swoop for Real Madrid ace Khedira this summer.
However, while the German international remained at the Bernabeu he has featured just twice for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season.
And with Real prepared to cut their losses with Khedira’s contract expiring next summer, he is thought to be available for £12million.
Reports suggest Arsenal have made the first move over rivals Chelsea and offered the 27-year-old a £100,000-a-week deal to come to the Emirates.
With Mesut Ozil out until 2015 with a knee injury, Wenger knows he needs reinforcements in midfield.
But Blues boss Jose Mourinho is also a keen admirer of the World Cup winner and is considering a bid to beat adversary Wenger to the post.
Mourinho has Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic in the central midfield positions but landing Khedira would give him more options and the chance to play Fabregas further forward.
