Veteran Ugandan playwright Alex Mukulu will be laid to rest on Thursday, August 20, 2026, although his family is yet to finalise his exact burial site.

Actor Charles James Ssenkubuge said Thursday was the proposed burial date, while Saturday had also been considered to give Mukulu’s children living abroad enough time to return to Uganda. Monday was another date that had been discussed by the family.

Ssenkubuge said some of Mukulu’s children are expected to arrive in Uganda on Monday, August 17, while others will arrive on Tuesday. On Tuesday, August 18, Mukulu’s body will be taken to the National Theatre, a venue closely associated with his decades-long contribution to Uganda’s theatre industry.

After the National Theatre ceremony, the body will be taken back to A-Plus Funeral Management before mourners gather at Mukulu’s home in Mengo for a vigil.

“Some of his children who are abroad will arrive on Monday and others on Tuesday. Therefore, let’s be here with them through the long night,” Ssenkubuge said.

On Wednesday, August 19, Mukulu’s body will be taken to his home for a requiem service and will remain there overnight before the burial on Thursday.

Ssenkubuge said the family will communicate the final burial location once a decision has been reached, noting that several possible sites are available and that there is no disagreement among family members.

“We shall inform you. All sites for the burial are available and he qualifies for either one and there’s no disputes on either,” he said.
