Residents of Butende village in Iganga district have reason to celebrate, following the construction of a modern well by Airtel Uganda in their town which was officially handed over to the community this afternoon.

Through their ‘Together We Can’ initiative, Airtel Uganda constructed the well that will provide clean water to the people of Butende, who previously had to make do with contaminated water from an unhealthy source.

Speaking at the handover, Ochieng Simon, a policeman and resident of Butende, thanked the telecommunications company for coming to their rescue.

“When I read about Airtel Uganda and the work they are doing in different communities, I decided to contact them and request for assistance and because of their positive response, we now have a well providing us with clean and fresh water,” he said.

“In the past, what we had was an unclean water source which we had to share with domestic animals- because it lacked a proper structure. The situation worsened during the rainy seasons which caused the inaccessibility to this water source,” Ochieng added.

“But today, I can confidently say that all these inconveniences and dangers to our health have come to an end, thanks to Airtel Uganda. It is now up to us to maintain this precious gift to our community,” he concluded.

Mr. Ezra Gabula, the Iganga district Vice Chairperson and chief guest expressed gratitude for the contribution Airtel had made to their community.

“We are grateful to Airtel Uganda for constructing this well and for always assisting people in less advantaged communities around Uganda,” he said, adding that other companies should also make an effort to develop the communities in which they operate.

Speaking at the handover, Airtel Uganda Regional Business Manager for the Eastern Region, Patrick Adiima said, “Through our Together We Can initiative, we have been able to change very many lives several people in different areas around the country. We believe that the wellbeing of people in these communities starts with us. I would like to recognize and applaud Mr. Ochieng for not giving up on his mission to help and improve his community.”

“We pledge to continue in this spirit- as we work together to breathe new life and hope into the lives and communities of the people who need them.”
