Airtel Uganda and the Buganda Kingdom have handed over sickle cells testing kits worth 200 million shillings to the Ministry of Health in a bid to join the efforts to reduce the burden of the sickle cells disease in Uganda and increase awareness of the ailment across the country.
The kits were purchased from funds obtained from the April 2019 Airtel Kabaka Birthday Run. This year, the run attracted over 50,000 participants – approximately ten thousand more than 2018. According to the Buganda Kingdom, 494 million shillings was collected from the run and 200 million has gone to purchasing sickle cells testing kits that were handed over today 25th July 2019. The rest of the funds will be directed towards sickle cells advocacy and awareness that is still at the heart of reducing prevalence of the condition.
According to the Minister of Health Honorable Dr. Jane Aceng, the kits have been distributed at various health centers across the country to enable newborn screening and extended sickle cells trait screening. She thanked the Buganda Kingdom, Airtel Uganda as well as other sponsors for their co-operation over the last three years that has seen the sickle cells awareness percentage go up from 2% to 30% currently.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ms. Remmie Kisakye the head of Brand and Communications at Airtel Uganda thanked the Buganda Kingdom for their continued prioritization of different initiatives in the fields of health for the greater good.

Sickle Cells is one of those,” she commented, adding that the increase in the number of Airtel Kabaka Run participants signifies that Ugandans appreciate the contribution that this initiative is making to their communities.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder in which the body creates sickle-shaped red blood cells, which affect blood flow in cells and organs causing pain and organ damage. Today, Uganda is at the forefront of fighting this disorder and the Ministry of Health is currently attracting international funders to increase awareness and testing.
The Airtel Kabaka Birthday Run is part of Airtel Uganda’s five-year partnership with Buganda kingdom to support four of its main annual activities including the Kabaka’s birthday celebrations, Kabaka coronation and Eid-El-Fitri.

DIAA is Africa’s most important gathering of C-Level Executives, and Senior Digital and IT executives. The event was a climax of the Include Everyone- Digital and Financial Inclusion Summit which explores the strategic trends and technologies that are shaping the future of Digital, IT and business. The DIAA seek to recognize, celebrate and appreciate different individuals and organizations that are spearheading the use of digital mediums to better serve their communities. The awards had 16 Uganda categories and 6 Continental categories. There was a jury/research panel assessment and public survey/vote to determine eventual winners. StarTimes was nominated in two categories; Africa Best Content App (Africa), and Disruptive Innovation (Uganda).In the ‘Africa Best Content App’ category, the StarTimes ON App was up against Kwese iflix, DSTV Now and Netflix. Airtel named Uganda’s top tax contributor

Airtel Uganda has been awarded Uganda’s Largest Tax Payer and recognised for their compliance in remitting taxes to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
The announcement was made during the Uganda Revenue Authority 14th Taxpayers Appreciation Awards – 2019 held in Kampala on Friday.
Airtel Uganda paid Shs136 billion in the financial year 2018/19 winning the Excel Award for the year.
“Airtel has contributed over Shs136 billion in the financial year 2018-19 making it the biggest contributor of income tax in the last financial year,” a statement from Uganda Revenue Authority read in part.
Handing over the award, the Minister of Finance Hon. Matia Kasaijja congratulated Airtel upon the achievement and lauded the company for their contribution towards the development of Uganda through tax.
Mr. V.G. Somasekhar, the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, thanked Uganda Revenue Authority for recognizing their contribution to the company’s GDP and the work they are doing to remain complaint. He also thanked Uganda Communication Commission, Ministry of Information Communication and Technology and the Government of Uganda for the support rendered to Airtel.
“It is an honor for Airtel to be recognized as the largest tax payer in Uganda. We are thankful to our customers and partners who have made Airtel their network of choice,” he noted.
“We believe leadership is a responsibility – one that we have happily taken on and this recognition is yet another milestone and an affirmation that Uganda has noticed. We remain committed to the leadership of the telecommunications sector and compliance is an integral aspect of that commitment,” he added.
The award comes on the heels of the company’s massive investment in innovation, network and infrastructural expansion.
