The Action for Community Treatment Services (ACTS), a Ugandan non-profit organization, has launched a new campaign titled “Men’s Mental Health in Africa”, aiming to raise awareness and provide support for mental health challenges among men across the continent.

As part of the campaign, ACTS Fund has started a weekly podcast hosted on Twitter (X), where mental health professionals and advocates come together to discuss key issues affecting men.
The latest session moderated by Clinical Psychologist Mr. Charles Ssenabulya was held on Friday, June 6, 2025, and focused on mental health struggles, substance abuse, and the impact of poor mental health on families.

Mr. Gideone Tomusange, a psychiatric clinical officer, shared that many men are currently receiving treatment in mental health facilities, mainly due to drug and substance abuse.
He emphasized that while women tend to have more suicide attempts, men have a higher rate of completed suicides.
Mrs. Diana Kibuuka, a psychiatric nurse and the Executive Director of ACTS Fund, described the situation as a “crisis.”

She explained that men’s mental health challenges are not only personal but have extended into their families and communities.
“Men are dealing with a lot of pain, stress, and anger,” said Mrs. Kibuuka.
“This clearly reveals that they need help and support from their wives and families.”
She also revealed that nearly 24% of adults in Uganda are affected by mental health issues, with men making up the larger percentage.

Since June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, ACTS Fund has committed to continuing the campaign throughout the month and beyond.
The organization encourages the public to join the conversation every Friday at 8 PM via their Twitter (X) account.
