If you are new to sports betting and are looking for tips on how to begin, this is your guide. Over time, sports betting has evolved to online platforms like Betway, unlike in the past, where punters had to visit bookmakers physically. In this guide, you might not find everything you need to understand to begin. However, you’ll learn enough to get you started.
Tip 1 – Have a Budget
Before you do anything else, determine the amount of money you are willing to risk. Once you know the funds available for sports betting, develop a plan. It could be a weekly or monthly financial plan. Then, ensure you follow it strictly.
When you’re beginning, you’re likely to lose more than win, therefore only stake money you’re comfortable losing. It would be smart to begin with a minimal budget, even if you have more money at your disposal.
After selecting a reasonable amount, decide how much you’ll stake per bet. You can start by wagering like 2% of the overall budget.
Tip 2 – Settle on What You’ll Bet On
In the past, gamblers could only bet on mainstream sports activities. But, today, you can literally bet on every sport event. Online betting platforms like Betway offer markets on almost all sports played professionally. You can also bet on all the tournaments, leagues, and competitions.
However, you cannot bet on all the sports. You need to decide on the sports you’ll focus on. Make this choice before you begin placing your bets. It would be best to bet on sports you are a fan of. Also, select a sport that has plenty of betting opportunities and is available throughout the year.
Tip 3- Choose a Betting Site
You can place your bets in different ways. However, doing it online is the easiest way. There are many online betting platforms available, but you have to select the one you’ll use. Choose credible sites because you’ll be staking with real cash.
Join a platform that has been in operation for some time and has a good reputation. You can compare the odds among the best sites and settle for the one that offers the best odds.
Tip 4- Familiarize Yourself with the Odds
In sports betting odds play a significant role. As you grow in the venture, you’ll want to grasp everything about odds. First, understand the three formats in which odds are presented: decimal, Moneyline, and fractional. Decimal is the prevalent form on online platforms like Betway.
Learn how to use the odds to calculate implied probability. Also, find out how sportsbooks utilize them to their benefit.
Tip 5 – Study the Simple Wagers
You can select from several sports wagers. It would help if you weren’t under pressure to master them all in the beginning. As a beginner, it would be best to start with the simple bets.
Some of the simple bets include the Moneyline bet, points spread, and totals bets. Familiarize yourself with these simple bets then grow gradually from there.
Sports betting can be a fun way of making money. As a beginner, don’t be in a hurry to make the quick buck. Take your time to learn the art, then select a reputable platform like Betway and get started. Start with simple objectives, and then adjust as you become more experienced.

By Our Reporter
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga has commended the Rotarians for their efforts in fighting cancer. The parliamentary speaker was speaking during the annual Rotary Cancer Run which was held virtually this year due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.
“The Rotary Cancer Run is one of those initiatives that very effectively demonstrate what can be achieved when the Public and the Private sector get together to address the challenges we have in our country,” she said.
“Cancer is not selective. Every man, woman and child has a risk factor, a risk we have to manage through our lifestyle choices and through the opportunity to test early. We are told that there are over 30,000 patients in Uganda that need need cancer treatment and care and thousands more we may not know about,” Hon Kadaga added.
The event, which was kick started by aerobics in the morning, had the participants run from the comfort of their homes and communities while watching the proceedings on the Uganda Rotary Cancer program website, the Rotary Cancer Run and Centenary Bank online pages. It was also telecast live on BBS Terefayina.
Speaking during a post-run virtual participant engagement in Muyenga, the Past District Governor Stephen Mwanje expressed Rotary’s gratitude for the awe-inspiring support from Ugandans and people from all over the world over for running virtually.
He said that, “Unlike other years, this year has seen us get overwhelming support from not only Uganda, but world over. We have recorded much more support from the diaspora compared to last year, attracting some of the world’s greatest commendations for this Virtual Rotary Cancer Run 2020.”
This year’s Rotary Cancer Run attracted global endorsements from renowned athletes like Tyson Gay, Bryan Habana, and Yohan Blake whose messages emphasized the importance of exercising, staying fit and eating healthy in the fight against cancer. Among other endorsements were those from people in Canada, Egypt, Djibouti, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
“The collections being made this year are directed towards the construction of two bunkers at Nsambya Hospital that will be housing the 2 cancer testing and treatment machines we hope to import in the near future,” Mwanje emphasized, adding that, “Given the impact of Cancer on our countrymen and the region, the bigger picture for Rotary is that, upon completion of the setup of the cancer testing and treatment center in Kampala, we will then move to four upcountry locations where we will setup 4 other state of the art Centers.”
In his remarks at the post-run engagement, Fabian Kasi, the Managing Director Centenary Bank said that, “Centenary Bank has been part of the Rotary Cancer Run for nine years, contributing close to Ushs700m in the period. In spite of the limiting circumstances, as a bank, we have contributed Ushs, 100 million this year, on top of availing digital channels through which contributions were remitted this time around.”
Kasi added that, “In as much as this year’s run has come to an end, you are encouraged to continue in the spirit of contributing and offering support to the construction of the bunkers. We must acknowledge that the fight against cancer is not over, and very many people still require our help to fight this disease. I therefore appeal to everyone here not to grow weary in this fight against cancer, but to keep hope and soldier on. Let us encourage all our friends, colleagues and families to keep participating and contributing toward this good cause.”
According to the 2018 Globocan statistics on cancer, compiled by the World Health Organisation, 32,617 new cancer cases were recorded in Uganda. Of these, 18,068 were female while 14,569 were male. The number of cancer deaths stood at 21,829 of which 11,819 were female and 10,010 male.
The trends also observed at the Uganda Cancer Institute indicate that almost 80 per cent of patients present the disease in advanced stages, hence limited interventions to prolong survival, an indication that the level of knowledge in the public and their perception of cancer, its symptoms, where to access treatment, and the care by the general practitioners is still low.
Since its initiation, the Rotary Cancer Run has attracted over 50,000 participants annually from Uganda, and the diaspora who have supported either through direct donations, charity drives, or by attending the run to raise funds to set up facilities for Cancer treatment in Uganda. In total, over Ushs. 2.5 billion net has been raised and many other forms of support in kind rendered to facilitate the fight against cancer in Uganda.

SuperSport adopts new system for channels to make it easy for viewers to find their favourite sports
By Our Reporter
SuperSport has dropped the numbering system it has used for its channels for more than two decades, replacing them with a thematic offering around individual sports to ensure it makes it easier for viewers to find their favourite sports.
From September 1, SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv will be able to enjoy special dedicated channels for leagues and sports, among them the Premier League, La Liga, WWE, UFC, tennis, motorsport, golf and several others, which will now have a home to call their own.
New to DStv Premium customers across the continent will see the launch of SuperSport Grandstand, which will come immediately after Blitz at the front of the line-up. Grandstand will be hosted in studio on weekends and will guide viewers to the wide selection of sport on the World of Champions, cutting between live events and simultaneously directing viewers to the channel on which the best sporting action is available.
On DStv there will now be up to 19 SuperSport channels in all, including a “Variety” channel offering.
In addition, DStv’s new sports line-up also includes ESPN and ESPN 2, on channels 218 and 219.
GOtv offers 5 Supersport channels, plus the recently relaunched ESPN on channel 37 (137 -Ghana/337 – Uganda).
“This is a landmark decision in SuperSport’s history and one I’m convinced will add a fresh and invigorating dimension to our broadcasts,” said Gideon Khobane, Chief Executive of SuperSport. “The changes will mean that additional SuperSport channels of local and international sporting content will be added to the DStv and GOtv platforms.”
SuperSport broadcasts more live sport than any other broadcaster internationally and as much as these options are incredibly valuable to fans, the depth and breadth of content can make it difficult to find what they’re looking for. Exhaustive market research has shown that fans would prefer to enjoy the sport of their choice on a dedicated, named channel.
The new strategy will more closely align channel names in across the continent and will indicate a clear destination for fans’ favourite sports.
